Steel is a popular structural material choice but it isn’t without disadvantages. Here are some disadvantages of structural steel:
- Cost – Structural steel fabrication is more expensive than using concrete due to the cost of the material and the fabrication process.
- Maintenance – steel needs to be repainted once every few years in order to prevent corrosion.
- Fire-resistance – though steel is much less combustible than wood, it is also relatively unsafe in the event of a large fire. This is because it loses its strength at around 250 degrees centigrade and therefore may collapse. It requires fire protection to prevent this from being an issue.
However, it’s worth researching the benefits of structural steel too before making any decisions. When I built my home, I found a company that offered structural steel fabrication in Kent as using structural steel fit my budget and my needs much better than alternative materials, despite the disadvantages.
