My aunt has a huge mirror right in the middle of her garden in Queens. I used to walk up to it when I was a kid and imagine that there was a whole new row of petunias on the other side of it. I always thought my aunt just liked combing her hair or checking her face when she was out gardening. I always looked at it like there was another world in it that existed right alongside our own.
When I grew older, I finally learned what my childhood portal to another world was. It turned out that what my aunt had was one of those garden mirrors that people use to make their gardens look bigger. That’s it. It was an aesthetic garden décor that served little purpose other than to reflect a little more light to some of the darker areas of my aunt’s garden. There wasn’t another world on the other side of it, but to this day that unique mirror – at least, to the 12-year old in me – was the most interesting mirror in the world.
